At Wonderfruit, Marcos Lutyens presented a trilogy of hypnotic and sensory interventions within the festival’s Unconditional Space—Cthonic Oracle, Entropy Flesh Labyrinth, and The Lucid Stream Elixir—curated by Francesca Bertolotti-Bailey. In Cthonic Oracle, participants entered a subterranean, circular chamber to undergo a grounded ritual of trance, touch, scent, and clay. As one participant described: “As I descended the vertical ladder, each rung taking me deeper into the subterranean depths, the walls and floor transformed into an ethereal shell of earth, enveloping me in its embrace.” Their body was anointed with vegetal paste, their feet ceremonially rooted in clay, and their consciousness guided through a hypnotic induction structured by the four cardinal directions—past, future, inner, and outer—mapped through color and gesture. In trance, each visitor inscribed sigils into a clay disc, later interpreted as an oracular self-portrait of their perceptual and emotional state.
The experience culminated in a return to waking consciousness and, later, the unexpected arrival of the fired ceramic tablet by post—an enduring material trace of the ritual encounter. Across all three Wonderfruit interventions, Lutyens activated hypnosis, mythic structure, embodiment, and altered perception as tools for navigating liminal thresholds between matter, memory, and imagination, where ritual became both psychological descent and collective transformation.
